About Us

Image

The Salvation Army – it’s a name familiar to just about everyone. But, there is so much more to The Salvation Army than meets the eye! In every community where you find The Salvation Army, you will discover a ministry that is unique. And yet, the same mission drives us all: to actively reach out to others in the name of Jesus Christ, and to introduce each one to a loving relationship with God.

For more than one hundred and forty years (since 1882), first in Oakland and then in Concord, The Salvation Army has been a vital part of the East Bay’s evangelical and social community.
Although it’s well known for its social ministries, The Salvation Army is less well known as a thriving and relevant mainstream christian church. You can find us at 3950 Clayton Road in Concord,  and everyone is made welcome at our vibrant weekly worship services and our programs for youth and music outreach.

Our exciting Sunday morning worship starts at 11:00 am and is usually finished by 12:15 pm. A highlight of family worship is a “food and fellowship” time immediately after the service.

The preaching is powerful and bible-based and you probably can't worship anywhere else where a brass band accompanies the singing every week! Looking for a spiritual home? Come join our Army!

Call the Church Office at (925) 676-6180 for more information.

Prayer Requests

Image

We believe in the power of prayer! We have even set aside a dedicated "Prayer Room" on our campus so that we can come together and pray for needs which are made known to us. This is in addition to the regular individual prayer time of all our believers.

If you have a special need or situation you'd like us to pray about, just fill in the confidential form below and it'll become part of our world-wide email prayer chain.

Youth Ministries

We have support and programs catering to young people ranging in age from toddlers to young adults. We provide nursery facilities during our worship services for the very youngest in families. Our Sunday School and Youth Mentoring programs give young minds a solid foundation for the challenges of life. Our older teens and young adults have opportunities to serve seniors and homeless members in our society.

Recovery Support

The Salvation Army has probably the most successful drug and alcohol rehabilitation program administered through our Adult Rehabilitation Centers (ARCs). Men who have graduated from the ARC program have the opportunity to further their recovery in our Transitional Living Program with dedicated housing assistance on our campus. We provide support and counseling as these men reconnect with their families and transition back into society.

Music Ministries

The public has a stereotypical view of our Brass Band tradition, especially at Christmas. We have a high standard of music making and have both junior and adult brass bands and choir groups that take part in our weekly worship services. We provide music instruction and instruments for members of all these groups from absolute beginners to college age music students.

Men's Bible Study

We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and can provide relevant instruction and a foundation for men in our society. We hold weekly bible study for men in a safe and highly participative environment. Especially for those in recovery this provides challenge, support and encouragement for facing the challenges of daily life. All men are welcome regardless of experience or knowledge level.

Women's Bible Study

The women in our congregation enjoy the weekly fellowship and sharing that takes place in our women's bible study. The meetings approach the study of the word of God from a more feminine perspective gaining insight and support for the special challenges women have to deal with in everyday life. All women are welcome regardless of experience or knowledge level.

Leadership Team

Life in this congregation is exciting, challenging and fulfilling – just as Jesus intended it to be, with many interesting and exciting activities for children, teenagers and adults alike. New ventures and traditional activities sit happily side by side in this friendly, ethnically diverse and all-encompassing congregation.

We are led by the full-time, ordained, minister/pastor husband-and-wife team of Majors Gwyn and AnnMarguerite Jones.

Major Gwyn Edward Jones

Corps Officer
Image Image

Gwyn's love for adventure - rock climbing, cycling, traveling - brought him to America from the U.K. when he was 23 years old. After a couple of summers working at a Salvation Army Camp, he accepted a position in a Salvation Army Church (corps) before entering The Salvation Army's College for Officers' Training in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. He used to restore antique furniture before his vocational ministry. He says, "Before I used to restore furniture, but now I have the privilege of helping to restore lives." His first appointment as an Assistant Officer (minister) was in Phoenix, AZ.

Major AnnMarguerite Jones

Corps Officer

AnnMarguerite loves "nerdy things" - brain games, puzzles, spelling games, escape rooms and fun office supplies. She also loves creating things and walking barefoot along sandy beaches. She met her husband while she was the Youth Pastor at a Salvation Army Church while a full-time student at Grand Canyon University. After graduating with a BA in Christian Studies and a Minor in Music in Piano Performance, she also followed her calling and attended the same College for Officers' Training. They were married after she was commissioned and also ordained as an officer (minister) in The Salvation Army.

Image

Majors Gwyn and Ann Jones were appointed as Corps Officers (Pastors/Ministers) of the Concord Community Church of The Salvation Army in July 2018.

They have been in ministry as a married couple for more than 25 years. They have four children - 2 boys and 2 girls - ranging from teenagers to twenty-somethings, so it is a very busy household. As a family, they love worshipping, working and playing together. Gwyn's family is originally from England and South Wales in the UK and AnnMarguerite's family from the Philippines passing through the Hawaiian Islands.

The love of God, family, music and food bring their cultures together.

They've had a variety of appointments and experiences which have helped shape them into who they are today. They know that they are still on their own spiritual journeys and there is always room for growth. Therefore, they are grateful for God's grace in their lives and feel humbled and privileged to serve the present congregation in Concord and its surrounding communities.
